55 VS 70-Inch TV Dimensions

Some people might not know that the 55 and 70-inch measurements refer to the diagonal length of the screen, particularly from the screen’s top right corner to its lower left corner.

Now that we got that out of the way, let’s take a look at the length and width of each TV size.

Width

  • A 55-inch TV measures: 47.94 inches in width.
  • A 70-inch TV measures: 61.01 inches in width.

Height

  • A 55-inch TV measures: 26.96 inches in height.
  • A 70-inch TV measures: 34.32 inches in height.

Keep in mind that the TV’s bezel isn’t included in these measurements. This means you’ll probably need to add a couple of inches to the width and height.

55 VS 70-Inch TV Viewing Distance

Every TV size has a different recommended viewing distance. Some TV manufacturers even set specific viewing distances for their TVs.

This is because failing to maintain a safe viewing distance can result in eye strain, blurry vision, and headaches.

The recommended viewing distance is determined by a couple of factors, such as:

  1. The amount of area that the screen should take up in your field of vision.
  2. The range at which your eyes can readily perceive the screen.

The ideal viewing distance for a 55-inch TV is around four to seven feet. A 70-inch TV, on the other hand, requires a viewing distance of six to nine feet.

55 VS 70-Inch TV Resolution

Resolution refers to the number of pixels (dots) that are present on a screen, which are commonly recognized by their vertical pixel count. In modern TVs, the resolutions you’ll typically find are 1080p, 4K, and 8K.

For example, you might’ve stumbled upon these numbers on a TV box before: 1920 x 1080. This means that the TV can show you 1920 pixels horizontally and 1080 pixels vertically.

The ideal resolution for a 55-inch TV is 1080p, while the recommended resolution for a 70-inch TV is 4K or UHD.

Which One to Choose?

It’s easy to opt for the 70-inch TV since the bigger the better, right? Well, not always. In fact, there are two important things to take into account when deciding between a 55-inch and a 70-inch TV.

Let’s take a look at them:

  1. Space Size/ Proximity

Everybody loves a big old TV screen. Well, not literally, but we do love having a cinematic experience live from our living room couch. However, when choosing a TV, the size of the room is a crucial factor to consider.

This is because the smaller the room, the more space a large TV might take up, especially if it’s placed on a unit. Also, some TV base stands eat up space on the surface they’re on.

On top of all of that, having a large TV in a small room can lead to eye strain and other health problems we previously mentioned.

If you’re not sure which size TV to get for your room, there’s a simple formula you can use. Firstly, convert the viewing distance into inches. Then, divide the sum into two. The result would be your recommended TV size.

For example, if you usually sit 12 feet away from the tv, that’s 144 inches. Divide that by two, you’ll get 72. As a result, a 70-inch tv is the right size for you.

  1. Cost

The relationship between TV size, resolution, and price is consistent in the world of televisions. The bigger the screen size, the more materials are needed for its construction.

Furthermore, the fact that TVs have grown to this size indicates that companies choose to invest substantially more in their development.

Naturally, this makes the 70-inch tv more expensive than the 55-inch tv. However, factors such as resolution and space size will influence whether or not you need to spend the extra money.

Pros and Cons of a 55-Inch TV

Pros:

  • More affordable option
  • Ideal for smaller rooms
  • 1080p resolution is good enough for most viewers
  • Easy to mount

Cons:

  • Lower resolution compared to a 70-inch TV
  • Limited viewing distance
  • Can take up more space than expected

Pros and Cons of a 70-Inch TV

Pros:

  • 4K resolution for an immersive experience
  • More immersive viewing experience
  • Wide viewing distance
  • Can be wall-mounted for a bigger impact

Cons:

  • More expensive
  • Needs more space
  • Requires higher mount

Final Thoughts

There are a variety of differences between 55 and 70-inch TVs in terms of dimensions, viewing distance, and resolution. This doesn’t necessarily mean that one is better than the other, but rather each one has specific requirements.

For example, the bigger the TV, the more resolution, viewing distance, and even room space you need.

To make matters easier, we’ve included a simple formula to know whether a 55-inch or a 70-inch tv is the right choice for you!
