How Can the PS5 Run 4K 120 FPS

These are the factors you should look into whenever you want to play at your desired graphic setting.

TV and Monitor

Most smart TVs support 4K resolution, but not all of them run at 120 FPS. Sometimes, the TV’s refresh rate limit is at 60Hz.

If you really want to play at 120 FPS, you should look for a TV that not only runs in 4K but also supports 120Hz. But if your TV natively runs in 4K at 120Hz, just enable it in the settings, then you’re good to go!

On the other hand, there are tons of gaming monitors that natively run 4K resolution at 120Hz. As long as your monitor is capable of producing the desired resolution output, your PS5 won’t have any problems running it.

HDMI Cable

To fully utilize the capability of your TV or monitor, you should be using the latest version of HDMI, which is 2.1. This version can run 8K resolution at 60 FPS, as well as 4K resolution at 120 FPS.

Even if you try the older versions of HDMI, the most you can get out of them is 4K resolution, but the frame rate will always stop at 60 FPS.

The PS5 already comes with an HDMI cable, so that’ll do the job.

Game

Sadly, not all PS5 games support the 4K 120 FPS resolution. For most games, the standard is still 60 FPS.

However, there are games that can run at 120 FPS, but the resolution is either 1440p or 1080p.

The following is the list of games that can run at 4K resolution with 120 FPS:

  • Centipede Recharged
  • Gunborg
  • Jumanji: The Video Game
  • Knockout City
  • Monster Boy And The Cursed Kingdom
  • Quake
  • Rogue Company
  • The Touryst

Other games are still in the process of being available in 4K. So for now, you should try the games we’ve mentioned if you want to experience playing in 4K.

PS5 Features that Allow 4K Resolution at 120 FPS

Sony has included two features that allow the console to run 4K resolution at 120 FPS. Your TV should have these, too, in order to produce the best video resolution.

  1. Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM)

TVs and monitors alike have built-in features that help de-noise, upscale, and make the images look better.

However, it actually takes time for these to work, which means there’s a delay between the TV and the viewer, even if it’s just a matter of milliseconds.

ALLM stops these unnecessary processes, which results in reduced input delay. Whatever the TV or monitor receives, it’ll show up on the screen in an instant. This makes the gaming experience better because the visual experience is smoother.

The PS5 has an on-off switch for this in the Settings menu. On the other hand, your TV will switch this on automatically if it doesn’t have a Game Mode option.

  1. Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)

Screen tearing is bound to happen when your TV’s refresh rate and the game’s framerate don’t sync up. Visible splits can occur on your screen as a result.

What VRR does is adjust your TV screen to alter its own refresh rate to match the frame rate of your PS5. This prevents screen tearing and enhances the image quality.

Turning this on will provide a responsive gaming experience.

How to Turn on 4K 120 FPS in PS5

If you’ve met the requirements needed to run 4K resolution at 120 FPS, you can finally start playing. Your console should automatically set the video resolution to the highest setting.

But there are instances wherein it’ll prioritize better resolution than framerates or vice versa. You can manually change the video resolution of your PS5 by following these steps:

  1. Open your PS5’s Settings menu by clicking the gear icon at the upper right of the screen.
  2. Scroll down, then click Screen and Video.
  3. On the Video Output menu, click “Resolution.”
  4. If it’s set to “Automatic,” switch it to “3140 x 2160 – 120 Hz.”
  5. Do the same thing to the 4K Video Transfer Rate setting.
  6. Next, scroll down, then click “Enable 120 Hz Output.”
  7. If it’s turned off, switch it to “Automatic.”

After doing that, you can now try playing a game that supports 4K resolution at 120 FPS! You’ll definitely notice the difference in the frame rates.

Conclusion

So, now you know that the PS5 can run 4K 120 FPS, as long as you have the right setup.

Even if you can’t run 4K 120 FPS, don’t worry because it doesn’t ruin the gaming experience. Moreover, it doesn’t reduce the fun of playing video games!

Have fun and enjoy playing!
