Requirements for Connecting Echo Dot to TV

Setting up Echo Dot as your TV speaker is an easy process. Still, there are some requirements to make sure it works.

You need an Echo Dot that supports Bluetooth connectivity (1st generation or above) and a Bluetooth-capable smart TV

Note that some TVs don’t have built-in Bluetooth, but they support connecting to Bluetooth dongles, which are easy and affordable to get.

How to Connect Echo Dot to TV

After making sure your devices meet the requirements for pairing, you can move on to connecting your Echo Dot to your TV.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Make sure your devices are close enough to connect via Bluetooth.
  2. Turn on your TV and go to Bluetooth settings and set it to pairing mode.
  3. Start searching for Bluetooth devices on your Echo Dot, you can do this by simply saying “Alexa, connect.”
  4. Now your device should search for nearby Bluetooth devices.
  5. Look for your Echo Dot device in the Bluetooth list on your TV and press the pair button.
  6. Now you should hear Alexa confirming that both devices are paired.

Remember that the connection method depends on whether you’re using a standalone TV or a TV with a receiver.

For standalone TVs, you’ll create the connection directly between your TV and Echo Dot. If you’re using a receiver, you’ll need to connect your Echo Dot to the receiver instead.

Also, it’s better to turn off Bluetooth on all your nearby devices to avoid any interference with your connection.

Pros and Cons of Echo Dot for a TV

Amazon Echo Dot makes a great smart speaker and voice assistant for your home theater. However, there are some downsides to using it as a speaker for your TV.

Pros

  • Echo Dot supports both Bluetooth and audio port connections.
  • By enabling skills in the Alexa app, you can start using voice commands to control your TV.
  • You can also use your Echo Dot to control other smart devices in your home, like lights and thermostats.
  • If you want to make your TV-watching experience even more immersive, you can say “Alexa, turn off the lights” or “Alexa, set the temperature to 72 degrees.”
  • You can ask Alexa questions with Echo Dot: This includes asking for the weather, setting alarms, and more.

Cons

  • If you connect your Echo Dot to a TV via Bluetooth, there’s a high possibility of audio latency issues.
  • You might not be able to hear audio from Echo Dot and TV speakers simultaneously.
  • If you’re a serious audiophile, the sound quality might not satisfy you.
  • The Alexa mobile app can be a bit buggy.

How to Avoid Echo Dot Latency Issues

If you want to avoid latency issues, we recommend connecting your Echo Dot to a Roku TV or a Fire TV stick.

Why? Because the connection across these devices uses Wi-Fi instead of Bluetooth, which offers optimal sound quality with minimal latency issues.

  1. Turn on your Fire TV.
  2. On your phone, open the Alexa app and access the devices menu.
  3. Tap the plus icon, then select the combine speakers option.
  4. Select Home Theater, then you should see the Fire TV device in the list.
  5. Choose the Fire TV device, then choose your Echo Dot to use as a speaker.
  6. Now choose a nickname for your audio system then tap save to finish the setup process.

That’s it! Now your Echo Dot is connected to your Fire TV stick and can be used as a speaker to play music, movies, and audiobooks.
