How far away can AirPods be tracked?

As an Apple AirPods owner, I know how frustrating it can be when you can’t find them when you need them! To help ensure that this never happens to me again, I decided to do some research and testing to find out how far away my AirPods can be tracked. In this blog post, I’m going to share with you what I’ve learned and any other solutions I’ve discovered in the process. So, without further ado, let’s get started and find out how far away your AirPods can be tracked!

AirPods can be tracked for if they are within 40 feet of your Apple device. You can use find my iPhone to locate your AirPods or to see their last known location.

If you lose your AirPods and they are in the case or they are out of power, there is not much that can be done to find them other than to see their last known location on Find my iPhone.

Quick Tips:
AirPods can be tracked for up to 40 feet from your device.
Find my iPhone can locate your AirPods or show their last known location.
Find my iPhone only works if your AirPods are within range of your device.
AirPods can be reset and paired with a new device if found.
AirPods cannot be tracked using their serial number.

Unfortunately, there is not much you can do beyond that. If your AirPods are in the case with the lid close, it won’t be possible for them to appear on find my iPhone if you go near them because they power off when they are in the case.

Also, it does not seem to be the case that the AirPods send their location if someone else with an Apple device is nearby, like can be done with iPhones.
