How to Raise a TV

As an owner of a television, I know the frustration of trying to get the perfect viewing angle. After many failed attempts to raise my TV myself, I did some research and testing to find the best solutions. Here, I’m sharing what I learned and the solutions I discovered to help others raise their TVs with ease.

You can raise a wall-mounted TV by mounting it higher. If you have a TV on a stand, you can extend the legs, invest in a taller stand, or add different objects under the stand to raise your TV.

ProblemSolution
TV too low for optimal viewing1. Mount TV higher on the wall (for wall-mounted TVs)
2. Extend the legs on the TV stand (if adjustable)
3. Invest in a taller TV stand
4. Add objects under the TV stand, such as wooden blocks or crates
5. Install wheels on the TV stand for added height and portability
6. Switch to a wall mount instead of a TV stand
Determining the optimal TV height1. Calculate the optimal viewing distance by dividing TV size (in inches) by 0.55
2. Measure the distance between your eye level and the floor while sitting on your sofa
3. Subtract half the TV size from the measured distance to estimate the optimal height for your TV

How High Should My TV Be?

When you ask people about the specifications of their TVs, you probably get some useful information, but if you ask about the height they’ve picked, they might not help you much. However, setting up your TV at the right height will be the perfect addition to your room.

Whether it’s wall mounted or set up on a stand, there are a few things that will affect how high your TV should be.

  • The wider your TV is, the higher it should be to create a balanced view.
  • You should think about the size, design, and layout of your room.
  • The location of power outlets will affect the spot you pick to set it up.

The optimal viewing distance is calculated by dividing the size of the TV in inches by 0.55. However, you can’t accurately determine the best height of your TV, which is the distance between the floor and the TV’s center. There are some guidelines to follow, but the most comfortable height differs from one person to another.

The best height for your TV should be slightly lower than eye level, but this will differ according to the height of your chairs and sofa.

You can get a rough estimate by sitting on your sofa and measuring the distance between your eye level and the floor. Then you should subtract half the TV size from this number to get an estimate of how high your TV should be.

Generally speaking, the optimum height should be equivalent or slightly bigger or smaller than the size of the TV. So, a 65-inch TV should be about 65 inches off the ground. A 55-inch TV can be about 60 inches off the ground, while a 70-inch TV can be about 67 inches off the ground. You can definitely increase or decrease the height according to your personal preferences.

How to Raise a TV

Bending your neck down to be able to watch TV isn’t the most fun experience. So, if you feel that your TV is too low, you can make a few adjustments to raise it.

Things will be easier if you have a wall-mounted TV. All you have to do is to pick higher mounts, and you’ll be able to enjoy a better viewing experience from the same TV.

If you have a TV stand, you can try a few things to raise your TV.

Check for Adjustments

If you’re lucky enough, there will be some adjustment brackets on your TV stand that will allow you to adjust it. TV stands are different, so you need to check the instructions manual to see how to change the height.

Buy a Taller TV Stand

If you feel that the current TV stand sits too low, then you might want to invest in a taller one. There are plenty of options on the market, so pick one that goes well with your TV and the rest of the furniture.

Check the Legs

While this isn’t that common, some TVs have adjustable legs that you can extend, while others don’t come with legs in the first place. You can tilt the TV and see if the TV legs are extendable. This way, you can also connect a platform stand or legs to increase the TV’s height.

Use Wooden Blocks

This is an affordable DIY solution that will help you raise your TV, and it can add ambiance to your room, too. Just add a few wooden blocks of any shape or color under your TV to raise it. Likewise, you can use a crate to add a rustic look and increase the height of your TV.

Install Wheels

Installing wheels to your TV will make it more portable and will add more height. You need to make sure that you’ve picked sturdy wheels to withstand the TV’s weight. The shape of the wheels will make your room look more aesthetically pleasing.

Invest in a Wall Mount

If none of these solutions work, you can switch the stand for wall mounts. This will be a better option if you have a bigger and heavier TV.

Conclusion

You can raise your TV for a better viewing experience by raising the legs, adding objects under it, and opting for a wall mounting option instead of a stand. However, you need to make sure that your TV doesn’t sit too high or too low, as you won’t be able to enjoy your favorite shows the way you want to.
