Is It Difficult to Mount a TV on a Wall?

Technically speaking, mounting a TV on a wall is a simple task. However, in order to get the job done, you’ll need several tools.

Additionally, the task will become even easier if you have someone to help you along the way, especially if you’re planning to mount a large TV like 40 inch TV or bigger.

The time needed to get the job done varies depending on many aspects, such as the size of the TV, the type of wall you’re mounting the TV to, whether you have a helping hand, etc. however, it should take anywhere between 45 to 90 minutes.

Before heading on to mount a TV, make sure that you bring all the necessary items to save yourself the back and forth. In addition to the TV and the mount, some helpful tools to have on you include:

  • A pencil for marking
  • An electric drill
  • Phillips screwdrivers
  • Stud finder (if you’re mounting on drywall)
  • Level
  • Measuring tape
  • Masking tape

A Step By Step Guide to Mount a TV on the Wall

Here’s a brief outline of the steps needed in order to mount a TV on your wall successfully:

Step 1: Choose a Proper Location for the TV

The first thing you need to do is to find a suitable location for the TV. Ideally, make sure that you mount the TV on a sturdy wall.

If you have drywall, make sure that you mount the TV on wall studs to avoid damaging the wall, as it might fail due to the weight of the TV. You can locate the studs using a stud finder.

Make sure that you clear the area where you’re going to work and use masking tape to prototype the TV dimensions on the wall and see if it’s a good fit.

Step 2:  Choose a Suitable TV Mount

There are various wall TV Mounts out there. The most popular and affordable ones are the fixed mounts, but you can also find tilting and articulating mounts that allow you to move the TV in the direction you prefer.

Also make sure that the mount is designed to support your TV weight, which is easily found in the product specification section in the user manual.

Step 3: Attach the Brackets to the TV

Check the back of the TV to find the holes where you can attach the bracket of the mount.

Follow the instructions of the TV mount in order to secure the fit and use a screwdriver to tighten the screws. Keep in mind that different TV sizes may use specific parts of the bracket.

Step 4: Mark and Drill Pilot Holes

After finding the studs on the wall, use the mounting plate as a template to find out where you need to drill the holes.

Make sure that you use a level here so that the TV doesn’t come out slightly tilted to the side.

Once you’re ready, use the pencil to mark the points on the walls where you need to drill. Follow the instructions on the label and use the suitable drill bit size while making the holes.

Step 5: Secure the Wall Mount

Now that the holes are drilled properly, place the mounting plate back on the wall and align it with the holes.

Use fixing bolts provided with the mounting plate in order to secure the wall mount to the wall. Tighten each screw halfway first then go all the way to avoid applying too much stress on the wall. Also, make sure that you don’t over-tighten the screws.

Step 6: Hang the TV on the Mount

Now that the mount is secured on the wall, lift the TV and carefully allow the brackets to sit on the mount as per the instructions of the mount. Once the TV is also secured, connect the cables and you’re good to go!
