Why Does Your TV Have No Sound?
Here are some of the most common causes of a TV’s picture working just fine but having no audio accompanying it. You’ll also find some tips on how to fix each issue in the list below
1. Software Glitches
With the advances in technology and the rise of smart TVs, your TV’s software has become arguably its most important component.
Sometimes this software can go haywire and not work in the way it’s supposed to. In turn, this may be causing your TV to lack sound.
How to Fix it
Your best option here is to turn your TV off, or even better, unplug it from the power source altogether.
After waiting for a couple of minutes, turn your TV back on. More often than not, you’ll find that the sound is back.
If the issue persists, then it’s advised that you contact the manufacturer and schedule a visit form a technician.
2. Damaged Speakers
The component of your TV that’s responsible for emitting sound is its built-in speakers. Therefore, the reason why your TV’s sound isn’t working may be that the speakers are damaged.
This becomes a more likely cause if your TV has recently taken a nasty fall. Another reason why your TV’s speakers may be damaged is that they’ve been exposed to water or any other liquid that may have shorted their circuit.
How to Fix it
Unless you have the technical experience yourself, there’s really not much you can do to fix this issue on your own.
If you’re sure that damaged speakers are the reason for your TV’s lack of sound, your best course of action is to contact the manufacturer.
3. Sound Is Disabled
There are a number of ways in which your TV’s sound could be disabled. For starters, the person who was using the TV before you may have lowered the volume all the way down to zero. They may also have put the TV on mute.
Another reason why your TV’s sound may be disabled is that someone turned it off from the TV’s settings menu. This may have been inadvertent, especially if you have a child at home who was left unattended with the TV remote.
How to Fix it
The first thing you should do is check the TV’s volume. Most TVs will automatically disable the mute setting as soon as you turn the volume up.
However, if you crank the volume way up and there’s still no sound, look for the mute button on your remote. This is usually a button with a crossed-out speaker on it.
4. Device Connection Issues
If you have an external device connected to your TV, such as a TV box or a gaming console, a faulty connection between it and the TV may be the cause of there being no sound.
How to Fix it
Most devices connect to TVs with an HDMI cable nowadays. Make sure that the cable is securely connected both on the device’s side and the TV’s side. If it is, wiggle it around a little bit and you’ll usually find that the sound is back up and running.
If you have an older device connected to your TV, it may be connected via RCA cables. These are a trio of red, white, and yellow cables. Check the connection of the red and white ones, as these are the ones responsible for the audio.
5. Device Is Connected to Headphone Jack
Another common cause for your TV having no sound is that the external device connected to it is set to transmit its audio output via the TV’s headphone jack. This means that your TV’s audio may be working just fine, but you can’t hear it because it’s not coming from your TV’s speakers.
How to Fix it
Check your TV’s headphone jack and ensure that the device displaying content on your TV isn’t connected to it. If there’s nothing connected to the headphone jack, then your TV’s lack of sound is being caused by something else.
Try a soft reset
A soft reset, is where you turn off the TV and unplug it from the wall outlet. You then usually have to wait for 60 seconds then you can put the plug back in and turn the TV on again. Performing a soft reset clears a device’s internal memory of running programs, which often clears up any technical glitches.
Try a hard reset
A hard reset involves completely resetting the TV to its factory defaults. Most TV models have specific instructions. However, if you have a Samsung TV here are the steps to follow:
To perform a factory reset:
- Head to Settings > General.
- Select Reset.
- Enter your PIN > then select Reset.
Note: If you didn’t change your PIN initially the code is 0000
Conclusion
If your TV has no sound, there are many possible reasons why that may be the case.
These reasons include software, hardware, and connection issues. Before you look into those issues as potential reasons for your TV’s lack of audio, you should first check that your TV’s volume isn’t lowered to zero and that your TV isn’t on mute.
