Fixing Vizio TV Blank Home Screen

Your Vizio TV screen might go blank for a few reasons. If the screen is completely blank, chances are the TV isn’t turned on. Check to make sure the TV is powered on and that the power cord is plugged in securely.

If your Vizio TV has a blinking light, it’s likely in sleep mode. To fix this, press any button on the remote control. If the light doesn’t blink, the TV might be in standby mode. Press the power button on the TV to turn it on.

If all else fails, then you should look for other possible reasons we’ll mention shortly.

Wrong TV Input Type

If your Vizio TV screen is blank but the power light is on, you might need to switch the input type.

You can simply do this by selecting “input or source” on your TV remote and trying to change it several times. If nothing changes, then you need to check your display cables.

HDMI Cable Issues

One common cause for Vizio TV’s blank screen is that the HDMI cable might be faulty, loose, or damaged. Inspect your HDMI cable for any damage, and make sure it isn’t loose. Finally, unplug it from the port and plug it back in.

Vizio TVs come with four HDMI ports, so if your HDMI cable is snug but still not working, you can try plugging it into a different port and then try again.

Vizio TV Needs to Power Cycle

Power cycling your TV fixes most of the blank-screen issues. Here’s how to do it.

  1. Unplug your TV from the power source
  2. Wait for 60 seconds. Don’t be impatient here.
  3. Hold your power button for 30 seconds to hard reset your TV
  4. Plug your TV back in and see if it still shows a blank screen

Hard resetting your TV should drain any power left in your device. It’s completely different than switching your TV on and off from your remote control. So make sure you follow the steps correctly for the best results.

TV Backlight Problem

If power cycling doesn’t fix your blank screen problem, the next step is to do the flashlight test. In case you hear audio from your TV and the screen is blank, the problem is likely related to the TV backlight.

The backlight consists of multiple LED strips, and it’s responsible for emitting the light that allows the TV to produce images. If any of the LED strips is damaged, the whole unit doesn’t work, which leads to a blank screen.

Here’s how to test your TV backlight.

  1. Turn off all the lights in your room
  2. Use a flashlight (your phone flashlight works)
  3. Stand two inches away from your TV and focus the light on your screen.

If you see a dim image on your screen, then the LED backlight is probably faulty. Replacing the LED backlights is much easier than you think. Still, we won’t recommend doing it by yourself unless you have experience in dissembling TVs.

In addition, dissembling your TV will void its warranty if it’s still valid, so it would be best to contact Vizio support or take your TV to a nearby service center.

T-Con Board Issue

If you don’t see an image during the flashlight test, then the T-Con board is most likely damaged. It’s a thin board inside the TV panel which is mainly responsible for creating the TV image.

If the T-Con board is defective, the TV will only show a blank screen. In that scenario, replacing it is the best solution.

You can search for your TV model on Amazon or E-bay to get a new T-Con board or visit your local repair shop.

Replacing the T-Con board is pretty straightforward. You only need to remove the rear panel, dissemble the old board by removing cables and screws, then place the new board in place.

However, if you’re not confident doing it on your own, you can hire a technician to do it for your or take your TV to a repair shop.

To Sum Up

There are several reasons for the Vizio TV blank home screen. The problem can be related to the HDMI cable, TV backlight, or T-Con board.

If you’re experiencing a blank screen, the first thing you should do is check all of the connections, that includes the HDMI cable and the power cable.

Once you’ve done that, if the issue persists, you can try a hard reset. Finally, try the flashlight test so you can detect what causes the blank screen problem.
