Why are my AirPods taking so long to charge?

As an AirPods owner, I know all too well the frustration of having to wait too long for my AirPods to charge. I recently ran into this problem and, after doing some research and learning more about how AirPods charge, I was able to figure out the cause and a few solutions. In this post, I’m going to share what I discovered and let you know about some other solutions that I came across. Hopefully, this will help you get your AirPods charged up quickly so you can get back to listening to your favorite tunes.

Tips
It should take up to 30 minutes to fully charge the AirPods if the case is already charged
Check the inside of the case and the bottom surface of the AirPods themselves to make sure there is no dust or dirt inside the case.
Make sure that the case is closing properly and allowing the AirPods to charge
Make sure that the case has at least one full charge remaining in it by checking that a green light appears when you open the lid without AirPods in the case
Try resetting your AirPods by forgetting them from your devices and reconnecting them
Check to see what kind of cord you are using to charge them and switch to a lightning cable cord
Make sure that there is no debris inside the case
It can take anywhere from twenty minutes up to an hour to charge fully, depending on the model
Check to make sure that the case is placed correctly on the charging mat if charging wirelessly

Why are my AirPods taking so long to charge?

There might be a few reasons that your AirPods aren’t charging quickly. To determine what the cause of the charging problem is, there are a few things you can try.

Your AirPods are charging fine but something else is wrong

To start, it might be the case that your AirPods have actually been charging normally but that something else has been causing issues. To see how much charge is in your AirPods, put them inside the case and open the lid next to a connected iPad or iPhone, a popup should appear that shows you how much charge they have.

It should only take up to 30 minutes to fully charge the AirPods if the case is already charged.

Debris

It could be the case that your AirPods are not being able to connect to the charging area, in the case, properly.

First, check the inside of the case and the bottom surface of the AirPods themselves to make sure there is no dust or dirt inside the case.

If you are used to throwing the AirPod case into a purse or backpack, crumbs and dirt from the bottom of the bag can easily get into the cracks in the case and eventually work their way in.

Case not closing properly

Next, check to confirm that the case is closing properly and allowing the AirPods to charge. If you don’t hear a click sound when you close the case, chances are the case is not closing all the way and the AirPods are not able to charge.

The case is out of power

Also, when you close the case, an orange or green light should appear. An orange light means that the AirPods are charging and a green light means that they are fully charged. If you do not see a light, it might be because the case itself is out of power.

Also, when you open the case, without the AirPods inside, an orange light means that there is less than one full charge remaining in the case.

If you have been trying to charge the AirPods, when there is less than one charge remaining in the case, it would be likely that they are not charging fully because the case itself does not have enough power left.

Possible reasons why your case might not be charging correctly are that the lightning cable is broken, the charging port is broken, the charging port has dirt inside, or the wireless charging mat is not working correctly.

Some users have found that their AirPods will charge normally if the charging case is plugged in. If that is happening, it would suggest that the case is broken,

AirPods not disconnecting in the case

When you put AirPods inside the case, they are supposed to power down and disconnect from your devices. It might be the case that your AirPods are not disconnecting when you put them in the case and it would help to check that they actually are getting disconnected. If they are not, it could be due to dirt inside the case causing your AirPods to stay connected.

However, it would help to try resetting your AirPods by doing the following:

  • Forget the AirPods from your devices
  • Put the AirPods in the case
  • Open the lid
  • Hold the button for 15 seconds until the light flashes orange then white
  • Reconnect your AirPods to your devices

You need to update your AirPods

It could be the case that your AirPods need to be updated.

To update AirPods and AirPods pro, it is just necessary to have the AirPods in the case while it is charging and to have a connected iPhone or iPad nearby. The AirPods will then automatically update.

Why are my AirPods pro taking so long to charge?

The AirPods Pro are known to take longer than other models to get charged all the way up to a full battery.

Since the AirPods Pro case has a lithium-ion battery, recharging happens slower than the other models that use another type of battery. This is because the lithium-ion battery doesn’t hold up well to being recharged quickly over time.

How long should AirPods take to charge?

How long your AirPods take to charge depends on what model of AirPods you have, and how much battery they have remaining in them when you put them in the case.

If the AirPods are dead, it can take anywhere from twenty minutes up to an hour to charge them.

For the AirPods and AirPods 2, you can expect it to take twenty to thirty minutes to charge the earbuds.  AirPods Pro can take up to an hour to get fully charged up to 100 percent.

How to get my AirPods to charge faster?

If your AirPods are taking longer than they should to charge, check to see what kind of cord you are using to charge them.

Aftermarket cords that are not manufactured by Apple may not charge the equipment as quickly as possible. Switching to a lightning cable cord can make the charging process go much faster.

Also, make sure that there is no debris inside the case, since that might also be causing your AirPods to charge slowly.

Additionally, it would help to make sure that there is enough charge left inside the case.

If you open the lid, while the AirPods are not inside the case, a green light means that there is at least 1 full charge remaining and an orange light means that there is less than one full charge remaining.

If the above is not at fault, and your AirPods are taking longer to charge than 20 minutes, it would be more likely that there is actually a problem with the case.

Why does my AirPods case take so long to charge?

When your AirPods case displays an orange or amber light, it’s time to recharge the case, as it only has one charge left in it.

It is normal for the AirPods case to take an hour to charge fully from zero. So, if your AirPods case is taking around an hour to charge, it would likely be normal.

If your AirPods case is taking longer than one hour to charge, it could be due to a problem with the case. However, it might also be the case that there is an issue with the way you have been charging it.

If your AirPods case has started to take longer to charge suddenly, it would help to consider what else happened when it first started taking longer.

If it started taking longer after you changed the cable, charging mat or the charged to charge the case, it would be likely to be due to that. If nothing else changed, it would be more likely to be due to a fault with the case.

It might be the case that there is a problem with the cable that you have been using to charge the case. If you have not been using one supplied by Apple or a reputable brand such as Anker, it would be worth trying to get a different lightning cable.

However, it might be the case that the wattage of the charger you are using is not high enough. However, this is unlikely since the AirPods case only needs 5 watts to charge maximally.

Also, if you have been charging the case wirelessly, it might also be the case that you have not been placing the case down on the charging mat correctly.

The AirPods case is meant to hold enough juice to re-charge the Airpods themselves three or four times. This is part of why it takes longer to recharge the AirPods case.

How long should the AirPods case take to charge?

You can expect it to take around an hour to charge the case to full power after you see the orange light appear on the case.

It takes around 20 minutes to charge the AirPods or AirPods 2, and the case holds two to three charges worth of power.
