Why is there black stuff on my AirPods?

As an AirPods owner, I was recently frustrated by the appearance of black stuff on my AirPods. After doing some research and testing, I’m here to share how I solved this problem and to let you know about other solutions I discovered.

The black stuff on your AirPods or AirPods case could actually be metal filings from the magnets in the case that close the lid. To get rid of it, you could try wiping it with a slightly moist cloth. Alternatively, you can use Blu-Tac. Otherwise, it would likely be ok for you to just leave it alone.

It is also possible that your AirPods or your AirPods case has dirt on it which you could also wipe off using a slightly moist cloth.

Tips for Cleaning Black Stuff on AirPods or AirPods Case
The black stuff is most likely metal filings from the magnets in the case that close the lid.
To clean the black stuff, you can use a slightly moist cloth, Blu-Tac, or a Magic Eraser.
90% isopropyl alcohol combined with a spinny electric toothbrush or a q-tip can also be used to clean the black stuff off.
If there’s dirt on your AirPods or AirPods case, you can also wipe it off using a slightly moist cloth.
Unfortunately, the black stuff will likely come back, so it’s necessary to accept that there will always be some black stuff on the case.

Why is there black stuff on my AirPods?

If there is black stuff on your AirPods, it would likely be due to how they have been rubbing with your case or because they have dirt on them.

It would help to try wiping the black stuff off by using a slightly moist cloth. Another option would be to try using Blu-Tac which will stick to the black stuff and pull it off when you remove the Blu-Tac.

Why is there black stuff on my Airpods case?

The black stuff on your AirPods case is likely to be magnetic fragments caused by the magnets inside the AirPods case.

To clean it, you could try simply wiping it using a cloth.

Alternatively, you could try using a magic eraser. The Magic Eraser is made from Melamine foam so it is not abrasive and will not damage the surface of the AirPods case.

Other options are to try using Blu-Tac as mentioned above, 90% isopropyl alcohol combined with a spinny electric toothbrush or a q-tip.

Unfortunately, for most people, the black stuff will quickly come back. So, it would likely be necessary for you to learn to just accept that there will always be some black stuff on the case.

How to get rid of black stuff on AirPods

As mentioned above, in order to get rid of the black stuff on your AirPods, you could try wiping it with a Magic Eraser, a cloth, Blu-Tac.

However, ideally, you would be able to wipe it using a slightly wet microfiber cloth.
