Why won’t my AirPods charge?

If you’re like me, you’ve probably been having some trouble charging your AirPods. I know the feeling of frustration all too well. After days of researching and trying different tips and tricks, I’ve finally had some luck with my AirPods and now I’d like to share what I learned with you.

In this blog post, I’ll discuss the common causes of AirPods not charging and how to resolve them.

Likely reasons why your AirPods won’t charge are that there is debris in the case, charging case is broken, your case is not getting charged properly due to a bad charging cable, not putting AirPods in the case correctly.

Tips

  • Common causes of AirPods not charging are debris in the case, broken charging case, bad charging cable, and not putting AirPods in the case correctly.
  • Check if the charging case has power in it by opening the lid and seeing if the light turns orange or green.
  • Clean the charging port and use a different charging cable if the case has power.
  • Try putting your AirPods in the case, open the lid, hold the button until the light flashes orange then white, forget your AirPods from your devices then reconnect them.
  • Clean the inside of the AirPods case using a q-tip if there is debris in the case.

Why won’t my AirPods charge?

Below are possible reasons why your AirPods won’t charge and what you can do about it.

Debris

It might simply be the case that there is debris in the charging case. It would help to clean the charging case and to try to wipe the inside of the case by using a cotton swab.

The charging case is not getting charged properly

To tell if your AirPods charging case has power in it, open the lid and see if the light turns orange or green. If no light appears, it means that there is no power in the case.

It could be the case that the cable you use is broken, you have not been placing the case on the wireless charging mat correctly or that the wireless charging mat is not actually compatible with your AirPods case. The wireless charging mat should be Qi certified.

You are not putting them in the case right

It could also be the case that you are not putting your AirPods in the case right or that there is something in the case that is causing the AirPods not to charge properly.

It would help to inspect the inside of the case, where the AirPods go, and to make sure that there are no debris in there.

It would also help to make sure that you are actually using the right charging case for your particular AirPods.

The charging case is broken

It could also be the case that your charging case is broken. To tell if the charging case is broken, try charging them via a lightning cable that you know is not broken (verify by charging a different device using that cable).

If the case does not show an orange or green light, it would mean that the case is likely to be broken.

The AirPods are actually charged, but not connecting to your devices correctly

It could also be the case that something is wrong with the connection with the device.

Try doing the following:

  1. Forget your AirPods on your device
  2. Make sure your AirPods case is charged
  3. Put your Airpods in the charging case and wait 30 seconds
  4. Open the case and hold the pairing button until the light flashes amber then white
  5. If your AirPods do not appear on your Device’s Bluetooth, it would suggest that they are broken.

The charging case only charges the AirPods when plugged in

Many users are having the issue where the light only turns on when the charging case is plugged in and will only charge the AirPods themselves if the case is plugged in.

To fix this try the following:

  • Use a different charging cable
  • Clean the charging port

The AirPods need updating

It could be the case that your AirPods need to be updated.

To update AirPods and AirPods pro, it is just necessary to have the AirPods in the case while it is charging and to have a connected iPhone or iPad nearby. The AirPods will then automatically update.

How to get my AirPods to charge properly

To get your AirPods to charge properly, try the following steps:

Open the lid of your AirPods case. If no light appears, it means that the case does not have any power in it. This could be because the cable or charging mat you are using is broken, the charging port of the case is broken or has debris inside or the case is broken. Try using a different charging cable and to clean the charging port inside the AirPods case.

If there is a light, it means that the case does have some power. Therefore, the issue could be that either the AirPods are not getting charged or they are actually not connecting to your device properly. Try putting your AirPods in the case, open the lid, hold the button until the light flashes orange then white, forget your AirPods from your devices then reconnect them.

If that does not work, try cleaning the inside of the Airpods case since it could be the case that there is debris in the case that is causing your AirPods not to charge properly. You can clean inside the case using a q-tip.
