As a PC gamer, I recently ran into a conundrum: can I play 4K resolution games on a 1080p monitor? I was frustrated, but determined to find out the answer. What’s the Difference Between 1080p and 4k for Monitors and Media?
Before you check the compatibility between your 4k media and the good-old 1080p monitor, let’s first see how the resolution terms 1080p and 4k (or 2160p) describe the pixels your monitor can display.
To put it simply, 1080p monitors have a column of 1,920 pixels across the length of the screen and 1,080 pixels along its height. The same concept applies to 4k, which has 3,840 pixels across and 2,160 pixels up and down.
The gist of it is that 4k monitors are able to display sharper and more detailed images which a 1080p monitor won’t be able to match.

With all that in mind, you still need to consider that the monitor’s resolution is different from the resolution of the media you’re playing.
So, if these two are different and the media’s resolution is higher, your monitor’s limit is the one that you’ll end up seeing on the screen.

Now you know the difference between a 1080p and a 4k monitor, and you also know that media resolution won’t boost the monitor screen’s limit. So, what will happen if you play a 4k resolution on a monitor that has fewer pixels?
Here’s what you can expect:
You Might Get a Slight Boost in Image Quality
When you play a 4k video on a 1080p monitor, your screen performance will be throttled at 1080p. As a result, you won’t get that ultra-high-definition quality.
However, because 4k videos are also created with better technology than 1080p ones, you may still be able to see a slight improvement.
For example, the camera used to shoot in 4k may be able to capture brighter or deeper colors, as well as better lighting.
So even if you’re technically only seeing a 1080p resolution, watching a 4k video on the monitor can still look better than the native 1080p media content due to the chroma subsampling encoding process.

If you really want to experience realistic game environments in 4k on a 1080p monitor, you’ll have to expect lags while playing. This may not be too huge of a problem if you’re playing a slow-paced game, so you can try it out to see if it’s manageable for you.

That being said, you won’t be able to get the full effect that a 4k video offers because your monitor is still limited to a set pixel resolution that won’t change with the media you’re playing.
You’ll also need to watch out for overheating and lags since the process might force your monitor to exert more power.
