How to Cast Oculus Quest 2 to TV Without Chromecast

As an Oculus Quest 2 owner, I know how frustrating it can be when you can’t seem to cast the headset to your TV. After a lot of research and testing, I am here to share how I was able to successfully cast my Oculus Quest 2 to my TV without using Chromecast. In this blog post, I’ll explain the different methods I tried, as well as any other viable solutions I found online.

Tips:

  • Check if Google Home app is allowed to work in the background while the phone sleeps and if it is updated to the latest version.
  • Make sure Wi-Fi settings are set to stay connected when the phone sleeps.
  • Exclude Google Home from Data Saver settings to allow it to use data in the background.
  • Consider turning off the phone’s sleep mode to prevent disconnection from Chromecast.

1. Cast Directly to Your Smart TV

The first way to cast Oculus Quest 2 to TV without Chromecast is by taking the middleman out of the picture completely. In other words, casting directly from your Oculus Quest 2 to your TV via the headset itself.

You can do this if your TV is a smart TV. here are the steps:

  • Switch on your Oculus Quest 2 VR headset.
  • Switch on your smart TV and enable casting on it.
  • Put on your Oculus Quest 2 VR headset.
  • On the home screen, look at the right part.
  • Locate the ‘Utilities’ section and use the trigger to access it.
  • Navigate to the ‘Cast to’ option and use the trigger to access it. You should now be seeing a pop-up menu with a list inside.
  • From this list, select the name of your smart TV.
  • Use the trigger to click ‘Next’ and start casting.
  • Once you do this, a “Casting Started” notification should appear at the bottom of the menu on your Oculus Quest 2 to let you know that the connection has been successfully established.
  • Finally, take off your VR headset to check the cast on your smart TV. It should be showing the content you’re viewing on the Oculus Quest 2.

Can You Cast Oculus Quest 2 Directly to Any TV?

While most newer TVs nowadays are smart models that can support casting from VR headsets such as Oculus Quest 2, older TVs can’t.

This means if your TV is an older small model or a non-smart model, to begin with, casting from an Oculus Quest 2 is probably not an option.

The minimum requirements needed in a TV to be able to allow casting from Oculus Quest 2 include a Wi-Fi connection, support for casting/streaming apps, high-quality casting resolution, and ports for accommodating streaming devices.

2. Cast via Your Smartphone

Another method to cast your Oculus Quest 2 to your TV is via your smartphone, particularly using the screen mirroring feature.

While casting via a smartphone isn’t as convenient as Chromecast and may not provide as high of a resolution, it’s a free and quick solution to the absence of a streaming device.

All you need to do this successfully is a working Wi-Fi connection and an Android smartphone. From there, simply follow the steps below:

  • Switch your Oculus Quest 2 VR headset on.
  • Turn on your smart TV and smartphone.
  • Make sure the 3 devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  • If you don’t already have the Oculus Mobile app on your smartphone, you need to download and install it.
  • Open the Oculus Mobile app and connect your Oculus Quest 2 headset to the app.
  • Once connected, navigate the app and locate the casting feature then turn it on. This will allow content from your Oculus Quest 2 to be viewed on your smartphone.
  • Now, you need to mirror your smartphone’s screen on your smart TV. You can use the default mirroring app on your smartphone to do this or download a mirroring app (for example, Screen Mirroring app) if your phone doesn’t have one.
  • Once the mirroring is successful, check that all the other connections are smoothly up and running.
  • You should now be able to cast content from your Oculus Quest 2 headset to your smartphone, which displays the content on your smartTV via its mirroring feature.

Keep in mind that cast in this method is likely to demonstrate a delay and a decrease in quality. The extent of these issues depends on the model of your TV and phone as well as the strength of your Wi-Fi network.

3. Cast Using Amazon Fire TV Stick

Last but not least, you can use Amazon Fire TV Stick to cast Oculus Quest 2 to your smart. The Fire Stick is an alternate streaming device to Chromecast that works pretty much in the same way as follows:

  • Plug the Amazon Fire TV Stick into your TV and set it up.
  • Download and install a mirroring app on the Fire Stick to enable it to mirror your phone as it receives content from the Oculus Quest 2.
  • Open the Oculus Mobile app on your phone and connect your Oculus Quest 2 headset to the app.
  • Once connected, navigate the app and locate the casting feature then turn it on. This will allow content from your Oculus Quest 2 to be viewed on your smartphone.
  • Use the mirroring app/feature on your smartphone to view its display on your smart TV.

Pros of casting Oculus Quest 2 to TV

  • It is a great way to experience VR with a larger group of people.
  • You can view the content in a higher resolution.
  • It is cost-effective and easy to set up.

Cons of casting Oculus Quest 2 to TV

  • The image quality may be compromised due to lag and lower resolution.
  • Casting directly to TV may not be possible if it is not a smart TV.
