Why do my AirPods only work in a certain position?

As an AirPods owner, I’ve been frustrated by the fact that my AirPods only seem to work in a certain position. I’ve spent hours trying to figure out why this is happening and I’m here to share what I’ve discovered. Through some research and testing, I believe I have finally solved this problem and I want to share with others what I have learned. In this blog post, I will discuss why your AirPods may only work in certain positions and how to fix this issue.

The most likely reason why your AirPods only work in a certain position is that the ear detector is broken. It would help to try turning automatic ear detection off in your iPhone’s settings.

Tips
Use Screencast, Smart View, or AirPlay to cast
Screencast is simple but may not be stable
Smart View is for Android devices
AirPlay is for iOS devices
Consider third-party apps or adaptors
Check device compatibility with TV beforehand

Why do my AirPods only work in a certain position?

If your AirPods only work in a certain position, it would be likely that they are broken.

A likely cause is that both or one of the ear sensors are faulty and not being able to tell when they are in your ears.

You can fix this by turning the ear detection off on iPhone and iPad, by clicking “settings” -> “Bluetooth” -> click the “i” next to the AirPods then you can click to turn off ear detection. However, this won’t help much when using Mac or Android.

It would also help to try cleaning the AirPods and to make sure that there are no debris inside of any of the grills.

It could also be the case that they are broken due to water damage or being dropped. This would be more likely if only one of them is not working or if they both stopped working since getting wet.

If only one AirPod is not working, it is an option to just use the other one by leaving the broken one in the case.

Another thing that is worth trying is to reset and reconnect your AirPods to your device by doing the following:

  1. Forget your AirPods from your device
  2. Put your AirPods in the case
  3. Open the lid and hold the pairing button for 15 seconds until the light flashes orange then white
  4. Pair your AirPods with your device again

Unfortunately, there are no other options than to take your AirPods to an Apple store to be fixed or replaced.
